A flashcard program

Here's a flashcard application that I'm testing now:

There are some shared Hindi flashcards that you can download or you can make your own, and then once you're viewing them you can rate how confident you are about the difficulty level of the card so the program knows whether it needs to show it to you again sooner or later.

The program can be used to learn any memorizable information that you can make flashcards out of, and I think it looks like a pretty neat way of learning stuff.  I'm just starting to use it so I guess I'll let you know later how it goes. But generally flashcards are a pretty good way of facilitating memorization. Maybe I'll get the hang of those Hindi letters while reviewing my flashcards...

I think a lot of the song lyrics you can't really understand without knowing the language well but luckily it doesn't stop me from enjoying the music.

Akshay Kumar

 My DH just walked in on me watching Akshay Kumar in action and he was quite astounded. "I didn't know you watch films like this; when can we have a romantic evening watching Jackie Chan or Chuck Norris kick some butt?"

He seems to be an actor with a lot of stunts and few expressions but it's starting to grow on me. No one who can run up a wall can be all bad :)

I think I already mentioned Kambakkht Ishq in which he's a stunt actor who spends the movie squabbling with Kareena Kapoor.

Dil to Paagal Hai is Shah Rukh Khan's film, Akshay Kumar has just a small role but I thought it was cute. He does a lovely little pantomime in the end.

 The photos on the left are from the movie Khiladiyon ka Khiladi. I thought the scene was unintentionally hilarious (the two guys are brothers, by the way) but besides this melodrama there was a lot of ass-kicking, some romancing and silliness.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Yash Chopra'a fina film Jab Tak Hai Jaan was pretty good, a beautiful film with some powerful emotion although I found Katrina Kaif's character a little annoying. Anoushka was more likeable imo although. Katrina looks doped in the poster and I didn't feel it was well motivated in the film, why she thought that Jesus wanted her to promise silly and destructive things in order to get answers to her prayers.  But I suppose if she had had more sense there would have been no Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

I have to confess that I did not learn much Hindi from this film because I was too engrossed in the story.

Taare Zameen Par is the story of an eight year old boy Ishaan who excels in art but fails most of his other classes. His teachers and parents don't know what to do with him so he gets sent off to a boarding school. They have a new art teacher who helps Ishaan overcome his learning difficulties. In the end art brings everybody together. It's a simple story but very movingly told, and I've always had a soft spot for films about teachers making a difference in children's lives.

Apparently it was inspired by the life story of Akira Kurosawa, a Japanese film maker.

Ishaan is played by a talented young actor Darsheel Safary and the art teacher is Aamir Khan.

I get so excited when I watch Bollywood films  and am able to understand something without the subtitles, so I'm happy to report that if Aamir Khan ever asks me to marry him I'll be able to understand him.

I love this film.
It's quite long so it took me two evenings to see all of it so my viewing experience was a little divided. The first half until the intermission I thought it was Saif Ali Khan's, Akshaye Khanna's and Dimple Kapadia's movie. The second part was Aamir Khan's all the way through.

Anyway, go watch it if you haven't already.
